Holocaust Memorial Day: Ignorance is no longer an excuse.

Photograph by Tim Turner
Ben Balla-Muir, Deputy Member of UK Youth Parliament for Horsham and Mid Sussex, has produced a blog as part of “Speak Up Speak Out”, remembering Holocaust Memorial Day last week.
Marking the liberation date of Auschwitz-Berkenau, Ben wrote the blog to reflect and share his experiences of visiting the infamous factory of death as part of the Holocaust Educational Trust’s ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ programme; not simply to remember what happened but for lessons to be learnt from the atrocities of the past:
“From just seeing the conditions of Auschwitz, where human beings were treated like animals in the wooden barracks of Berkenau, I plead that it be recognised how dangerous prejudice is. Ignorance is no longer an excuse and it is no longer acceptable to blame innocent minorities. I feel exceptionally lucky that I am alive now, so will not let the efforts of my grandparents’ fight against such hate be in vain; we must learn from the past and pledge together to combat prejudice as a society.”
This also follows on from the inspirational talk given by Iby Knill at UKYP’s Annual Sitting 2011. In 1942 Iby was imprisoned as an illegal immigrant and eventually taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau and then as slave labour to an armament factory in Lippstadt. Liberated by American forces, she came to England in 1947. Having kept silent about her past for decades, over the past ten years Iby has told her story and spoken out about the Holocaust and lessons that must be learnt.

Election Fever – Biggest Turnout?

We are in the middle of election season at UKYP which started in the run up to Christmas and will carry on over the next couple of months. UKYP will be updating the elections list with as many details as possible so please do submit the latest election details and results as soon as possible via the new website submission form.
Emma Chadwick, current MYP for Leeds who is standing down from her post in March has said:
"The more young people who vote the more influence we have. Young people face another year of big challenges ahead and it is really important that the newly elected MYPs hit the ground running with loads of support, so I urge young people to engage with the elections in their local area."
UKYP is calling on young people to really boost the mandate. It has been estimated that 500,000 took part in elections last year, and with local youth council and mayor elections the overall total could be over a million.
Mu-Humid Pathan, current MYP for Leicester said:
“This is a busy and exciting time for local young people to cast their vote and increase our mandate to represent young people locally and to Westminster. Voting in the UK Youth Parliament elections is one of the best ways to engage young people so that when they are old enough to vote in national elections they are already engaged in the political process. There are so many young people who are disenfranchised and this is a great way for them to get involved and get their voices heard.”

Dec 19th : Positive For Youth Government Strategy launched. UKYP to feature in plans to put youth voice at heart of decision making.
The Governments strategy - Positive for Youth was launched this week by Children's Minister Tim Loughton MP. What do you think? Be the first to comment on our forums.

"Positive For Youth makes a strong, long-awaited commitment to young people to support their relationships, their ambitions and opportunities to be successful. The strategy brings a welcome partnership approach from central and local Government and the voluntary sector in order to give young people the best possible start in life, supporting them to become engaged and active citizens. Whilst the strategy underlines a strong strategic direction towards a positive, young people-focused vision, I have concerns around the achievability and measurability of the strategy, particularly during this time of austerity and limited investment in local youth provision." Josh Harsant PG Group, and UKYP rep to stakeholders group to DFE on Positive for Youth.
Xavier Hussain UK Youth Parliament Media representative said: “It is also particularly worrying that the statement continues to allow councils to cut our youth groups and centres, as the Government "won't tell them [the councils] what services to deliver or how to deliver them", and is allowing private organisations to bid to take those services. I will continue to campaign with the UK Youth Parliament for more concrete measures to tackle youth unemployment, rescue youth services faced with closure and reduce the cost of higher education - so that my student debt doesn't have to skyrocket as the Government's debt falls.”
BYC and UK Youth Parliament will continue to campaign against the cuts to youth services particularly those who will be needed to support the growing numbers of youth voices participating at the heart of Positive for Youth. _______________________________________________________________
Dec 16th : MYPS go to Downing Street to hand in messages to PM supporting childrens rights as part of year of action for UN Convention Rights of the Child.

Emma Chadwick MPY Leeds and Media spokesperson said: “The UK Youth Parliament totally supports the UN Convention of Rights for the Child. As a parliament we believe in free speech, free expression on any issue that affect us and this is supported by Article 12 of the Convention. We also believe in the potential of the young representative voices to actually make a difference to our society – especially when there is so much inequality still to be addressed. We look forward to a day when these rights are not only accepted in principle but influence the thinking, decision making and allocation of resources by decision makers so that children are free from fear, poverty and inequality.”
Phooja Khatri, MYP, (15), (pictured) from Harrow, said: "Politicians and adults go to Downing Street but for children and young people to be here on such an eventful day is really meaningful and a huge honour. It is so important that young people are heard by politicians."
The event was organised by a coalition of organisations led by Childrens Rights Alliance England with a mixed delegation including representatives of BYC and UKYP. Three MYPs attended:
Back row from the left: 2nd Kaleb Blackwood 16 (with hat) MYP Camden, 4th from left Rhammel Afflick MYP 17 Kingston (shirt and tie), 5th Pooja Khatri MYP 15 Harrow.

And the national campaign is...
‘Make public transport cheaper, better and accessible for all'
In 2011 the UK Youth Parliament carried out a nationwide poll of over 65,000 young people. The results of this poll identified the top five issues of concern for young people in the United Kingdom today. On 4 November 2011, Members of the UK Youth Parliament sat in the House of Commons and voted on which of these five issues ought to become the priority campaign for the UK Youth Parliament in the coming year. Following the nationwide poll where 65,000 young people identified it as a priority concern and the subsequent vote in the House of Commons, ‘Make public transport cheaper, better and accessible for all' is now the priority campaign for the UK Youth Parliament in 2011/12, which will see young people across the UK campaigning and lobbying for change and action in this area.
Jamie Davies (pictured) from MYP for East Sussex who led the transport debate said:
"Transport has been raised as a concern for young people by the UK Youth Parliament since it was established in 2001, consistently and continually over the last ten years. Yet too often we are happily accepted as adults when it comes to parting with our pounds, but then treated like kids when it comes to having our voices heard.
Over 65,000 young people already back our cause but they are too young to petition parliament itself. Therefore we are asking the public to support our campaign with an online petition so that the Government and MPs sit up and take notice. It is all about what we can do now, to help the young people of today and the young people of tomorrow to make a better future for all."
