Which political issues are you most passionate about?

I get passionate about a lot of things, but if I had to pick one it would have to be representation. We need to try and sort out the fact that we can be treated as adults (and have the same responsibilities) in so many ways as teenagers, but still not have the right to be represented with a vote. I don’t necessarily think there should be votes at 16, but the system has to be made fairer.

What do you feel is the biggest issue for young people in your constituency?

Alongside our ballot for the Young Essex Assembly last year we ran a very comprehensive survey all over Essex asking what the most important issue for young people was. By a very long way bullying was the most concerning one in Epping Forest (and in Essex as a whole), so that’s going to be our top priority.

What do you hope to achieve during your term of office?

Well I think there needs to be better efforts to promote the work of UKYP; if ever I mention it to a friend I just see a blank face. This has the potential to be a really important organisation if only everyone knew about it! In particular though I really do want to see better awareness of the issue of bullying, especially how the issues around it just aren’t as simple as people make out.

What is your future career ambition?

Still not sure. I think I might do something on the academic side of politics or journalism but I still have a lot of options open which is not bad thing.

If there was one message you could send to the government, what would it be?

We are in a bad recession, and we must act to help people, but please be careful about carrying on building up Britain’s national debt. It may not seem like a big or interesting issue in the short term, but it’s not fair that our generation might have to pay for your generation’s mistakes.
