Name: Collette Lewis
Position: Deputy MYP
Constituency: Hertfordshire
Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
International development and women’s rights. On a more local level, making political education compulsory yet also engaging so that we can target political apathy amongst young people.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
Transport – it needs to be more affordable and more available.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
Raise awareness about politics and UK Youth Parliament so that more young people are interested in these issues as well as ensuring that the Hertfordshire council and MPs are at least aware of the issues facing young people in the county and hopefully taking that awareness forward into action.
What is your future career ambition?
Civil servant or ambassadorial role within government, preferably in the human rights or international development sector.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
Rita Levi-Montalcini – a female Italian Nobel prize winner who is now over a hundred years old and was ahead of her time with her feminist views that propelled her to become a brain surgeon even in the midst of war and fascism. If we all could be just a little bit like her in values and courage I am sure the world would be a better place.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
Young people are not the future, as much as you keep telling us, we exist today and we deserve our voices to be heard now and taken into account. Just because most of us cannot vote does not mean you have the right to ignore us.
Additional comments:
I hope that eventually the fantastic work of UKYP will be able to influence young people’s rights in developing countries so that they too will have a voice within their own countries.
