Name: Alexandra Slipper
Position: MYP
Constituency: Lincolnshire
Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
I am very interested in issues such as environment, education and health care. I believe politicians should pay more attention to young people, particularly education, because we are the next generation of tax payers and decision makers.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
I think the price of transport in my area is an issue because prices have risen dramatically over the past few years. I also think we should be considered children up until we are 18 as most young people stay on in education and do not have the funds to support these rising costs. I also think there needs to be more to do in my area for young people indoors. This is the main reason for the bad image young people currently hold.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
During my term in office I would most like to bring in more things for young people to do, like setting up a place for young people to go without having to pay huge sums of money. I would like to get involved in environmental campaigns as I think this is one of the biggest issues our generation will face. Raising the awareness of UKYP amongst young people is important so that our work can be more effective. My aim is to help any young person who needs assistance in helping their local community, whether that be saving a skate park or campaigning about votes at 16, I want to represent the young people in my area effectively.
What is your future career ambition?
I would like to follow a career path in economics, working in London. I find all aspects of the economy very interesting and am taking economics A-level next year. Perhaps in the future I will enter into politics as this has been an ambition of mine for several years.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
I admire Margaret Thatcher - who went to the same school as I do now - because she was the first female Prime Minister in a parliament that even today is very male orientated. She has also contributed massively to the way the country is run today and made some admirable achievements including the victory in the Falklands war. She still holds the record for the longest term in office.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
Remember who voted for you. I think government is too constricted by protocol and needs to start listening to what the people want rather than doing everything for their own gain which seems to be how politics has become.
Additional comments:
Thanks to everyone who elected me. I hope I can represent everyone in my area to the best of my ability. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have anything you would like to discuss.
