Name: Rizwaan Malik

Position: MYP

Constituency:
Brent

Which political issues are you most passionate about?

For me, a particularly important issue is the whole thing on ‘lowering the voting age to 16’. At 16 you can die for your country, you can pay taxes for your country. Surely if you can die for your government you should be able to vote for it too? I’m also very passionate about the whole political situation between Palestine and Israel. I hope one day soon, we shall be able to see a peaceful, working solution happening there.

What do you feel is the biggest issue for young people in your constituency?

There are so many issues that affect all the young people in my area. And what I find is that different issues affect different people. So in Brent Youth Parliament we have got five different specific areas. For example, one of them is on crime and safety which addresses the big problem of gun and knife crime that Brent faces.

What do you hope to achieve during your term of office?

The reason I got involved in the UK Youth Parliament was to give young people a voice. The UK Youth Parliament is a fantastic way of hearing all the many issues and concerns that young people have. If I can voice these and actually get something done about it, then I have succeeded.

What is your future career ambition?

To be honest, I have no idea. But at the moment I like the idea of moving into law maybe, but then again maybe I could go on with my dream job of being a firefighter!

Which public figure do you most admire and why?

For me there is one person. And that is Mohammed Ali, not only was he the most incredible boxer of all time but he strived for such justice and such great morals.

If there was one message you could send to the government, what would it be?

The government NEEDS to listen to young people more. They are constantly making laws and decisions that are going to affect so many young people in the country. If they consulted and listened to what young people actually wanted and needed, then the government would be a lot more effective.
