Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
Getting something for young people to do in my area! There’s not much in the way of activities for young people. Also, votes at 16 with political education from a non-biased source in schools and colleges - this would help improve voter turnout in elections both now, and in the future. Another issue I feel strongly about is electoral reform and reformation of the House of Lords. I feel it’s shocking that Labour in the 2005 election got into power with 35.2% of the vote and 55% of the seats! Something is surely not right there, and the House of Lords is just undemocratic! (Something which many countries have been slated for, yet we have an undemocratic second chamber in our Country!) It should be made up of intellectuals who are actually voted in, not the Prime Minister’s best mates.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
Probably transport. To get to local colleges and schools people have to get buses/trains and they simply aren't frequent enough or are really full at peak times. This matter should be addressed as it’s a concern quite a lot of people have voiced an opinion about.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
Hopefully sort out something for our constituency's young people regarding transport, or getting something for all of us to do and by that I mean not hanging around on street corners!
What is your future career ambition?
I would love to get the A-Levels to study medicine at Leeds University or Kings College London, however, if I don't, I think I'd like to be a Secondary School Teacher or College Tutor in Chemistry and Biology or even a University Lecturer in Biochemistry.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
Arthur Scargill, absolute legend. He stood up for what he believed in back in the dark days of the 1980s and even created his own party when Labour deserted their socialist roots. He’s a true working class hero, and you can tell that the mining community are still grateful for it. He's the honorary president of the Yorkshire Union of Miners, and the good old Iron Lady got hounded out of her own party and shoved in the un-democratic House of Lords. People like this should be praised and not slated, as Arthur Scargill could be an inspiration to a lot of young people who are in Youth Parliament.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
Listen to the young people of your country - they're the future. A lot of us do actually want a say in politics instead of it all being left to people over the age of 18, since when does a year gained mean political knowledge becomes entrenched?
