Name: Fred Cotterill

Position: MYP

Constituency:
Bath and North East Somerset

Which political issues are you most passionate about?

My main issues are equality in society, protecting the environment and good education. In my opinion these three areas are critical to the wellbeing of young people, as without any one of them social justice cannot be achieved. It disgusts me that people starve on the streets while others are paid ludicrous amounts of money but do not benefit anyone other than themselves. Contributing towards our social problems is the consumerist culture, only by working together can we move society forwards for our future.

What do you feel is the biggest issue for young people in your constituency?

In my constituency public transport is extremely limited and I would like to improve this. The number of jobs available for young people is also an issue as there are very few vacancies; this makes any meaningful work hard to get and opportunities to gain experience for later life scarce.

What do you hope to achieve during your term of office?

I would like to work on a better public transport system as doing this has environmental benefits; using buses is far more eco friendly than the equivalent number of cars. I also want to take part in campaigns against tuition fees which are unjust and foster divisions in society by elevating those who come from a more privileged background.

What is your future career ambition?

I am hoping to go into politics where I would like to help change things across the country for ordinary people and work for an equal and fair society that does not discriminate on class, gender, sexuality or anything else.

Which public figure do you most admire and why?

Che Guevara is an iconic figure for me. He saw the poverty-stricken suffering of thousands in South America and fought to change that, even though it led towards an inevitable death for him. No matter the odds he carried on battling for the common good and the vision of that ‘great leap forwards’.

If there was one message you could send to the government, what would it be?

Start listening to us. If the government started basing their stance on people, not money, then it would immediately begin to make better lives for millions. The British public, and young people in particular, are sick of the government’s aloof attitude and going back to Labour’s roots would be a breath of fresh air for democracy in this country.
