Name: Charlotte Kelly
Position: MYP
Constituency: Staffordshire

Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
I am probably most passionate about the issue of the many different forms of discrimination on the rise in England’s youth at the moment, whether it be in the form of racism, homophobia or even just playground bullying.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
I think the biggest issue is one of ignorance. Although there are problems like bus fares, and media perception, I think the thing that will affect these young people most in the long run is the lack of awareness of a lot of highly important things stopping them making decisions for themselves.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
In my term I hope to bring light to a lot of these subjects, particularly the problem of discrimination. I want to help teenagers understand the people behind stereotypes, and raise awareness of things like immigration, and dispel the amount of fear instilled in these teenagers that’s raising them to hate. It’s something I feel is relatively overlooked in Staffordshire at the moment, despite it being a fast-developing problem, and I intend to stop it.
What is your future career ambition?
When I’m older I think I want to go into politics, although I’m not sure yet. This term with UKYP will be a big decider of that!
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
I really admire Che Guevara. I find it incredible that, although he only visited Latin America as a medical student, the effect it had on him was so great that he could start a revolution. He wasn’t perfect, and his actions did have some severe consequences, but I think the amount of passion and bravery he had was amazing, from just being a normal man.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
Pay attention! Stop worrying about the trivial things, and focus on the massive! There may well be some problems with buses and some people might not be happy, but global warming’s happening! Also, stop trying to feign fighting for “freedom” in one place when thousands more are dying everyday in corrupt developing countries, and you aren’t doing anything because they either have no monetary value, or you’re just plain scared! The soldiers are amazing and brave and you’re messing around with them! I think my main message would be to stand up for something, Mr Brown.
