Name: Andy Marlow
Position: Deputy MYP
Constituency: Birmingham
--------------------------------------------------------
Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
The five issues I put in my manifesto: the environment, the often unfair stereotype of youth within the media and society, votes at 16, homelessness and people trafficking (for more information on this last issue, see www.stopthetraffik.org)
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
Locally, it’s a lack of affordable facilities and transport. In Sutton, for example, there are only shops and one cinema, and the bus fare to get there is increasingly expensive. Given that young people naturally want to socialise, it isn’t surprising that many spend their time roaming the streets.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
I will make progress with my manifesto promises- that means raising awareness about homelessness and people trafficking, campaigning for an improvement in environmental standards in Birmingham’s schools, trying to remove the unfair stereotype of youth (through a youth column in a regional newspaper) and supporting UKYP’s votes at 16 campaign.
What is your future career ambition?
Ideally, I would like to become a human rights lawyer, fighting for the rights of the oppressed and persecuted worldwide. Then later in life, I feel I could make a real difference by entering parliament where I could bring issues to people who can do something about them.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
There is no specific person I admire, but if pushed I’d say Kofi Annan. His leadership of the United Nations qualifies him as a lot of problems could be solved by international co-operation and by the breakdown of boundaries as nations come together to find a common solution.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
I will keep on shouting until you listen; I will not give up until I succeed.
