Name: Abiodun Olatokun
Position: Deputy MYP
Constituency: Birmingham
Which political issues are you
most passionate about?
Young people's representation in the media is the primary issue that I campaigned on. Though it was not elected as one of my regional issues, I sought and achieved election as a media representative to attempt to tackle the wholly negative way that young people are portrayed in news reports and other media. I also care about young peoples' representation as a whole, and believe that the UK Youth Parliament should send young people who are updated and informed to decision makers. I try to motivate my Birmingham colleagues to work conscientiously for the 250,000 young people they represent.
What do you feel is the biggest
issue for young people in your constituency?
Crime. Inner-city Birmingham is full of disaffected young people who have no other activities to keep them occupied and safe. This is why the Birmingham “Equal and Awesome” team and I campaign locally to stop Birmingham City Council closing the most used youth centres and youth schemes.
What do you hope to achieve during
your term of office?
Changes in the regulation of media. More strict controls over the way they represent young people and protection of the most popular Birmingham and West Midlands youth services.
What is your future career ambition?
I want to be an army lawyer and human rights barrister. People around the world have their civil liberties deprived, but even in the United Kingdom certain pieces of recent legislation cast a shadow over our rights. I want to help protect the ideas and principles which protect us.
Which public figure do you most
admire and why?
I admire Caroline Lucas, leader of the Green party, because of her affectionate perspective on the economy and her belief that other areas of the economy should take the fall in the recession so the public sector can be protected.
If there was one message you could
send to the government, what would it be?
Save important youth services.
