Which political issues are you most passionate about?

I’m passionate about people, particularly young people getting involved in politics and helping to shape their own futures by participation and by voting in elections. But people need to put thought into these kind of things which is why I’m a strong advocate for political education.

What do you feel is the biggest issue for young people in your constituency?

Young people have nowhere to go in the city centre so they often get accused of hanging around on street corners and being a nuisance. I’d really like young people to have somewhere to go during the weekends and evenings to hang out.

What do you hope to achieve during your term of office?

I really want to get political education packs that we’ve been making to be used in citizenship lessons across all the schools in York.

What is your future career ambition?

I hate this question. In an ideal world I’d be earning a fair amount and have long holidays but unfortunately I don’t think that’s going to happen. I like the idea of working abroad using my language skills but also teaching in a secondary school and giving something back to society. I may eventually end up running for office but I think it’s important that I get some life experience before that.

Which public figure do you most admire and why?

I really admire Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King as they all overcame prejudice to succeed their own personal dreams and improve lives for millions of people.

If there was one message you could send to the government, what would it be?

Young people really do care about issues so involve them and listen to them. They may seem put off but so many young people care about particular issues when you talk to them and would really like to see things changed. All you need to do is involve them and things will change because sometimes young people have better ideas than politicians!
