Name: Harry Wright

Position: Deputy MYP

Constituency:
North Yorkshire

Which political issues are you most passionate about?

As well as involving and engaging young people in politics, I am passionate about environmental issues. I also care greatly about rights to debate and speak being maintained for all regardless of race, ethnicity, or personal opinions.

What do you feel is the biggest issue for young people in your constituency?

Transport - my constituency is rural and quite large, so we have a lot of private bus companies who all charge different fares and have different age limits for young people!

What do you hope to achieve during your term of office?

I hope to achieve a great deal. I want young people and adults to know about UK Youth Parliament and the work it does, and to improve opinions of young people in the area. Our local campaign focuses on transport, but we are a very new constituency so I want to get UKYP established in the area and get MYPs known and taken seriously.

What is your future career ambition?

I would love to become a journalist, as I enjoy writing and I feel that the media is the most powerful commentator on the state and is thus very important. If this cannot be realised, becoming a musician or an MP would also be good!

Which public figure do you most admire and why?

In politics, I admire Gordon Brown (I’m aware I’m in the minority!) for his resilience and integrity and William Hague for his oratorical skills. Outside of politics I LIKE rather than ADMIRE celebrities, but always enjoy reading the work of Ian McEwan and Philip Pullman. (As well as many deceased).

If there was one message you could send to the government, what would it be?

There is a huge untapped group of people who hate or don’t understand politics, and I feel it’s important to try to engage with them as they too care and have issues which matter to them.

Additional comments:

Best of luck to everyone in their terms as MYPs - let’s prove that young people are the solution, not the problem!
