Research commisioned by Campaign for Better Transport (CfBT) revealed that cutting the price of public transport would reduce the UK's carbon emissions.
According to the research, if public transport fares were reduced by 20% - bringing them in line with what our European brothers and sisters pay - bus travel would increase 13% and rail travel 17% by 2015.
The Government has put together a plan called Delivering a Sustainable Transport System yet it avoids the issue of cutting fares to encourage the use of public transport.
If we're to have a truly sustainable transport system, train and bus tickets must be made cheaper. The Government's plan should include this, and show how it can be funded; for instance, by taxing the fuel used for domestic flights.
CfBT are campaigning for reduced fares on public transport for a better environment, support their campaign by emailing Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon.
