The facts about sex and realtionship education in the UK.
1 In England and Wales, sex education is not compulsory in schools as parents can refuse to let their children take part in the lessons.
2 In Scotland, the main sex education program is Healthy Respect, which focuses not only on the biological aspects of reproduction but also on relationships and emotions.

Britain has the highest number of teen pregnancies in Western Europe and the cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among this age group have almost doubled in the last 10 years

PSHE (Personal Social and Health Education) and Citizenship are non-statutory at Key Stages 1 and 2, whilst Citizenship, but not PSHE, becomes statutory at Key Stages 3 and 4.

5 The sex education elements of the National Curriculum Science Order are mandatory for all pupils of primary and secondary school age. These cover anatomy, puberty, biological aspects of sexual reproduction and use of hormones to control and promote fertility.

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of SRE provided outside National Curriculum Science.

Learning about sexuality, relationships, choice, delay, safer sex, risks and pregnancy choices are recommended to be taught within PSHE and are outlined in Government guidance, but are not a statutory requirement.

8 1.5 million new cases of sexually transmitted infections (STI's) are being diagnosed each year.

One in every ten babies born in Britain is to a teenage mother. Most of which are unplanned.

10 Little formal school sex education took place before the Second World War. There are references from the 1920s to senior girls being provided with instruction on such topics as ‘self-reverence, self control and true modesty’, and to boys, on leaving schools, being given talks on the ‘temptation of factory and workshop life’, with special reference to sex.
