20/06/2008

The Times reported today that the number of terminations for girls under the age of 14 has increased by 21%, further highlighting the urgency for compulsory SRE in this country.

The UK Youth Parliament published its report on sex and relationships education, SRE; Are you getting it? last year stating that 73% of young people felt that SRE should be delivered under the age of 13, with 56% of boys under 11 wanting SRE in primary schools. Latest statistics revealed about the alarming rates of abortion amongst under-age young girls demonstrates the need for SRE at a younger age then is currently being taught. Holland starts teaching sex and relationships education at the age of 5 and also has the lowest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe.

Clarissa McDinald, previous MYP for Dudley, said "at my school sex education isn't evry regular. I'm now in year 10 and the last time we had education to do with sex was year 8 - it wasn't very clear, they just went through the basics".

UK Youth Parliament is currently co-chairing a review into the current state of sex education in schools with the Department for Children, Families and Schools.
